Tragedy struck the just-ended 44th Annual National Union of Ghana Students (NUGS) Delegates Congress when a polling station assistant, who is also a NUGS member, lost his life in a fatal motor accident.

One other student, who survived the accident, is however said to be in a critical condition. The incident is said to have occurred at Bamahu near Wa in the Upper West Region.

The 44th NUGS congress was held at the campus of the University of Development Studies in Wa.

The deceased, Acquah Adoba, a level 300 student and his colleague whose name was only given as Enoch are students of the University of Education, Winneba, Kumasi Campus.
Peace FM’s Special Correspondent at the NUGS Congress, Kwame Frimpong reports that the two were asked to go to Wa Township and print additional copies of ballot papers for the NUGS election at about 7:30pm.

According to him, Enoch, who was the motor rider accidentally knocked down a pedestrian. The impact of the crash threw Acquah Adoba who was sitting at the back of the motor-bike into air. He unfortunately landed in a gutter and died instantly.
Meanwhile, Anthony A. Abochie has been elected as the new President of NUGS. Mr. Abochie takes over from Wonder Madilo.

Reports say other executives were elected after several protests from some of the student delegates when the police came in to carry away the ballot boxes. The police were said to have carried out that action because they felt the students had wasted too much time.

Halimatu Hisad of the Christian Service University was elected the Coordinating Secretary; International Relations went to Benedicta Lesley of University of Ghana, Eunice Yogri of the University of Development Studies was elected the Women’s Commissioner and Rita Amuzu of Jayee University was elected for Press and Information.
