THE EASTERN regional deputy director of the Electoral Commission, Eric Mensah-Bonsu, has given firm assurance that the re-run of elections at the six polling stations at Akwatia will come on today as scheduled despite Sunday’s trouble in the town and the curfew imposed on residents there.
According to him, he does not see why elections could be held in about 22,000 polling stations across the country and could not be held in only six polling stations because of security concerns.
Mr. Mensah-Bonsu who was speaking in a telephone interview with DAILY GUIDE from Koforidua said the regional office has put in place all the necessary measures to ensure that today’s re-run goes on smoothly without any problem.
“We have done all the necessary publicity and have gotten all our election materials ready for today’s elections,” he said.
He indicated that the commission will be using the register from the last general elections adding that those who have intentions of impersonating will definitely be fished out because all eligible voters have corresponding pictures in the voters’ register.
According to him, impersonation by voters will never be possible. He warned those who have planned to do so to desist since the law will catch up and deal with them drastically.
He explained that the commission has contacted the Eastern regional police commander to ensure that enough security personnel are stationed in the town from the voting time of 7am to 5pm, for peaceful elections.
He told DAILY GUIDE that they had also requested for more armed military personnel to be on duty in the town today to ensure that all voters and election officers are safe.
“I want to appeal to all security personnel who will be on duty today to be fair and firm and not compromise on their neutrality so that everybody would be protected,” he stressed.
