204x_mg_nriu48xkk2_alex_segbefiaTHE DEPUTY Chief of Staff, Alex Segbefia, has mapped out a strong defence for Carl Wilson, stressing that the chairman of the Confiscated Vehicles Committee is innocent of all the allegations leveled against him.

Putting up a defence for his darling boy in an interview with Oman FM, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) stalwart said Mr. Wilson has not been found guilty of any of the allegations made against him by his opponents.

Mr. Segbefia contended that various committees set up by the government to investigate Mr. Wilson over allegations of selling confiscated cars have all cleared him of any wrongdoing.

But interestingly the public has not been fed this wholesome information all this while, though the allegations the so-called committees investigated were made in public. Read more

Kufuor Blasts Mills

March 10, 2010 by admin

204x_mg_rvmy51boo3_ja_kufuorEX-PRESIDENT John Agyekum Kufuor has stated that the calculated attempt by the Mills-led National Democratic Congress (NDC) government to criminalize every initiative of his erstwhile administration saddens his heart.

“I do not simply understand why the Mills Administration has made it a grand agenda to make evil of every initiative my administration undertook,” the immediate past President wondered.

The Gentle Giant, as he is affectionately called, told Angel Fm in an exclusive interview that he was particularly worried about the government’s decision to reverse the four-year duration of the Senior High School (SHS) system.

In order to ensure that students have enough learning space, ex-President Kufuor’s administration adjusted the hitherto three-year duration of the SHS programme to four years.

But immediately after assuming office, President Mills, through his Minister of Education, Alex Tettey-Enyo, announced that the four-year duration has been reverted to three years.

“I am particularly unhappy about that decision because governments do not change decisions for the mere reason that it was taken by a previous administration,” ex-President Kufuor said. Read more

NDC Ministers Culpable

March 10, 2010 by admin

204x_mg_nriu48wkk1_john_hardy2The Chief Prosecutor in the Mabey & Johnson (M&J) case in which some senior members of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) government, including Ministers of State, have been indicted, has indicated that there is documentary evidence to support their prosecution.

He said the documents point to their culpability.
John Hardy noted that the prosecution cited bank accounts extract cheques and the like, which supported the bribery allegation against the Ghanaian officials.

In an interview with DAILY GUIDE yesterday, Mr Hardy, who is in the country on the invitation of the Danquah Institute (DI), noted that the information was not uncovered by an investigation but revealed to the investigation team by M&J officials.

Unlike the directors and managers of the company who were and are still under investigation in their individual capacities, he noted that the Ghanaian officials were not going to be the subject of prosecution in the United Kingdom (UK). Read more

Public Accounts Committee wards off CJA’s criticism

March 10, 2010 by admin

204x_mg_g3bn16qed8_kandapaahThe Public Accounts Committee of Parliament has mounted a strong defense of its commitment to fight corruption in the wake of criticism that it has made a fetish of public hearings without following through to ensure prosecution of corrupt officials.

The pressure group Committee for Joint Action, which made the charge at a media briefing on Tuesday, said the parliamentary committee has failed to follow through to ensure that individuals who misapply or embezzle state funds are either prosecuted or slapped with punitive sanctions.

The Public Accounts Committee is presently holding another round of public hearings on the Auditor General’s report and already several cases of abuse of public funds have been raised. Read more

NPP Strategises For 2012

March 10, 2010 by admin

204x_mg_n63ul88kkf_jake_lampteyTHE NATIONAL Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Jake Obetsebi-Lamptey, has emphasised the need for the supporters of the party to come together and work hard to send the ruling government back to opposition due to its poor performance.

He said the time has come for NPP members to stop thinking about the causes of their defeat and concentrate on the strategies and policies that will bring them back to power in the 2012 parliamentary and presidential elections.

Mr Obetsebi-Lamptey made these remarks at a retreat to usher in the new executives at Mankessim, in the Mfantseman District of the Central Region, yesterday.

The three-day retreat was attended by both the out-going and the incoming new executives of the party.

He hinted that NDC members are confounded by the peaceful manner in which the party elected its new executives, hence the need to set up campaign committees. Read more

Rawlings in Abuja: Ghana may fail justice test

March 9, 2010 by admin

204x_mg_rawlings_in_abujaEx-President Rawlings thinks for the first time, Ghana may fail to deal with the crimes of a previous regime. Read the full statement he read in Abuja over the weekend.

ADDRESS BY FLT. LT JERRY JOHN RAWLINGS, FORMER PRESIDENT OF THE REPUBLIC OF GHANA AT THE EXTRAORDINARY CONGRESS OF THE UNITED CITIES AND LOCAL GOVERNMENTS OF AFRICA (UCLGA) IN ABUJA, NIGERIA – SATURDAY, MARCH 6, 2010

Your Excellency, Honourable Ministers of State, Distinguished Guests, Ladies and Gentlemen, thank you for inviting me to deliver the keynote address at this Congress.

Last December I was at the Africities Conference in Marrakech, Morocco where I spoke into detail about the significance and importance of decentralisation to the political development of the continent.

This Summit I understand is meant to celebrate unity within the association but I am a little disappointed to hear that you are still grappling with that subject.

The problem of unity or the lack of it is down to our inability as a continent to develop our political evolution in a manner that will inspire a little more confidence in the populace. Read more

NPP fears Gbevlo Lartey – Omane Boamah

March 9, 2010 by admin

204x_mg_ine5hts22b_gbevlo_larteyThe Deputy Minister for Environment, Science and Technology, Dr Omane Boamah, says the NPP’s call for the exclusion of National Security Coordinator, Col. (retd) Larry Gbevlo Lartey from the NDC’s 2012 campaign team is borne out of fear.

He said because the opposition New Patriotic Party wronged Gbevlo Lartey when they were in power, they sense that he is seeking vengeance on them.

Col. Larry Gbevlo Lartey has been named as part of the ruling party’s campaign team for the next general elections in 2012.

This has led to calls particularly from the NPP for him to either resign from his national position or be sacked by the president.

NPP General Secretary, Kwadwo Owusu-Afriyie (popularly known as Sir John) has argued that by his position, the National Security Coordinator has no business in meddling in the affairs of a political party, insisting that doing so would compromise his neutrality.

But Dr Boamah thinks there is absolutely nothing wrong with Gbevlo Lartey being a member of the campaign team. Read more

NDC Boss Fumbles Over Gbevlo-Lartey

March 9, 2010 by admin

204x_mg_ine5hts22b_gbevlo_larteyTHE NATIONAL Chairman of the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC), Dr Kwabena Adjei, had a tough time defending the appointment and role of Lt. Col. Larry Gbevlo-Lartey on the political committee of the party.

Gbevlo-Lartey himself had asked DAILY GUIDE to contact the national executive of the NDC to ascertain the role he would be playing in his new position.

This was when DAILY GUIDE contacted him over his new appointment and whether or not that would not conflict with his role as National Security Coordinator.

Mr. Gbevlo-Lartey admitted he does not know the role he would be playing in his new position and asked this reporter to speak to the national executives who may have an idea about what he is expected to do.

But when DAILY GUIDE managed to reach NDC chairman Dr. Kwabena Adjei, after several efforts, his initial comment was “no comment at all.” Read more

Scandal Hits Castle Boy

March 9, 2010 by admin

204x_mg_c28jb44ayu_alex_segbefiaCARL WILSON, the darling boy of Alex Segbefia, deputy Chief of Staff who is embroiled in the confiscated cars selling syndicate, has again been fingered in an alleged carting away of stolen goods from the United Kingdom.

As Chairman of the Confiscated Vehicles Committee, Mr. Wilson has been arrested once briefly by security operatives over a number of suspected car deals in the country, but was expectedly released almost immediately, apparently due to his intimate connections with some of the nation’s power brokers.

Carl Wilson has been accused several times of allegedly stealing confiscated cars and selling them on the open market with the help of garage operators.

Member of Parliament (MP) for Manhyia, Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, has asked government to investigate the deputy Chief of Staff’s man for purportedly taking away at Tema Harbour, 18 confiscated motorbikes believed to have been stolen from London, since the issue has the potential of denting Ghana’s image internationally. Filed under General News, Politics

204x_mg_wcse73hut5_atta_rawlingsFormer President Jerry John Rawlings and his family, on Sunday March 7, attended a church service at the Action Chapel in Accra to thank God for saving them from the devastating inferno that razed down their Ridge official residence on Valentine’s day.

The official residence of the former first family was completely brought down to ashes when fire gutted the property.

Mr. Rawlings’ wife, Nana Konadu Agyeman-Rawlings and daughter, Yaa Asantewaa, were present at the time of the incident but managed to escape unhurt.

The family was at the Action Chapel in the company of several friends, sympathizers and some leading members of the NDC to show gratitude to God for keeping them intact despite the unfortunate tragedy.

Former President Jerry Rawlings and his entire family were at the service except his son Kimathy.

Notable among the sympathizers was now famous Atta Kumah popularly called Atta mortuary man, who Mr. Rawlings spoke about during the NDC’s national delegates’ congress in Tamale.

NDC stalwarts Ekwow Spio Garbrah, E.T Mensah and Joshua Alabi were present at the church service. Read more
