204x_mg_arsenal_bendtner_nasriNicklas Bendtner struck a hat-trick as Arsenal outclassed Porto to overturn a first-leg deficit with ease and clinch a place in the last eight of the Champions League.

Bendtner – heavily criticised after a succession of misses in Saturday’s win against Burnley – scored twice in the first half to wipe out the 2-1 lead Porto were protecting from the first game in Portugal.

Andrey Arshavin was instrumental in both goals as Bendtner added the final flourishes to Arsenal’s flowing attacking moves that enabled them to take control almost instantly.

Porto applied brief pressure after the interval, with Manuel Almunia saving from Falcao, but Arsenal completed the formalities and cruised into the quarter-finals with two superb goals inside three minutes just after the hour. Read more

Sir Alex Ferguson dismisses Red Knights link

204x_mg_sir_alex_fergusonManchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson has rejected claims he is supporting a potential takeover of the club by a group of wealthy fans.

It had been suggested Ferguson would invest his own money in the club if the bid by the “Red Knights” succeeded.

But Ferguson insisted the reports are “absolute rubbish – there is not an ounce of truth in it”.

On Sunday one of the “Red Knights” told BBC Sport that they had had no contact with Ferguson.

A United spokesman added: “[The owners] the Glazer family and the manager enjoy 100% trust in each other.”

The debt level of more than £700m incurred under the Glazers on a once-debt free company has caused unease among some supporters.

Thousands of fans have joined the green and gold protest against the Americans, who bought the club in 2005, by wearing the colours of Newton Heath – the club was renamed Manchester United in 1902. Read more

Essien not rushing return

March 8, 2010 by admin

Chelsea will not be rushing Michael Essien back into action from injury with the Ghana midfielder having suffered a setback in his rehabilitation process.

The Stamford Bridge side had hoped the Ghana international would have returned to action for their Uefa Champions League second leg tie against Jose Mourinho’s Inter Milan.

But that doesn’t look likely as Essien would spend some more time recovering after missing the six week recuperation deadline following a knee injury picked at the recent African Nations Cup back in January.

The midfielder himself admits the wait on the sidelines has been painful. Read more
