Valley View University admits 961 students
Some 961 students were on Sunday admitted into the Valley View University, (VVU) at Oyibi, to pursue various Degree Programmes.
The students who are from eleven African countries would undertake courses in twelve programmes, including Theological Studies, Accounting, Banking and Finance, Human Resource Management and Marketing.
Addressing the students, Dr. Seth Laryea, President of VVU, said the current student enrolment had shot up the entire student population to 3,289 who are from 21 countries. Read more
Nigerian-born twins set British record
Nigerian-born nine-year-old twins have become the youngest pupils to be admitted to a secondary school in Britain, timesonline.co.uk has reported.
Paula and Peter Imafidon had already broken world records when they passed A/AS-level mathematics papers at the age of 7. Yesterday, the twins joined hundreds of thousands of other families across the country to find out which secondary school they would attend, despite being two years younger than most of their counterparts.
Peter and Paula, from Waltham Forest, northeast London, attend a normal State primary school but have received provisional offers from more than 12 leading secondary schools. Read more
District Assembly addresses poor BECE performance

The Shama District Assembly (SDA) has taken stringent measures to check the falling standards of education in the area, evidenced by the poor performance at the basic education certificate examination (BECE).
The BECE results for last year showed that, out of the 17 districts in the Western Region, the Shama district came 16, recording 70 percent failure.
This was disclosed by Madam Emelia Arthur, Shama District Chief Executive (DCE) to the Ghana News Agency, when she toured the 18 Junior High Schools in the district to collate views on the situation to find solutions to the problem. Read more

Mr. Christian Addai-Poku, president of the National Association of Graduate Teachers (NAGRAT), has outlined two conditions the government must fulfill to get striking teachers back to work;
the government must send circulars to the teachers, accompanied by evidence of cheques (even if photo copies) to pay off service allowances for teachers outstanding for nine months, or
that teachers due the allowances can actually access the money in their bank accounts.
Failing these, Addai-Poku, who was speaking on Adom FM’s Dwaso Nsem programme, said NAGRAT members will continue to stay out of the classroom until the demands are met, cautioning also that no amount of pleadings and promises would be entertained because the teachers were tired of them since they always turn out empty. Being its first time of participating in the competition, the University of Ghana is expected to prove itself a leading university on the continent.
The clash between the two universities would be shown on Metro TV coming Saturday between 9:00-9:30pm with a later broadcast on Sunday between 8:00-8:30 on TV3.
The competition promises to be the most exciting as the six contestants, three each from a side, rack their brains to answer some of the most difficult questions in the fast-paced quizzical show. Read more
DBS students are national service materials – DIBSSAG

The Diploma in Business Studies Student Association of Ghana (DIBSSAG) Kumasi Polytechnic chapter has appealed to the Minister of Education and the Ghana National Service scheme secretariat to place diploma certificate holders on the scheme after two years studies at the polytechnic level.
This was contained in a press release by the public relations officer of the association Mr Richmond Frimpong.
According to him they play integral role in the economic development of the country by contributing immensely in their field of operation. He lamented that diploma holders are more essential to the country but they have been ignored by the national service scheme. Read more
Strike: NAGRAT boycotts meeting with Education Ministry

Efforts by the Education Ministry to talk the National Association of Graduate Teachers (NAGRAT) out of their indefinite strike has hit a snag after the teachers failed to turn for an emergency meeting on Monday.
The meeting was to resolve a day old strike by the teachers to press home their demands for payment of car maintenance and responsibility allowance which they claim is in arrears.
Despite the palpable setback, the Public Relations Officer of the Ministry of Education, Paul Krampah believes the teachers will soon return to the classroom. Read more
GES releases GH¢10m to pay members’ outstanding arrears

A statement signed on Sunday by the Head of the Public Relations, Mr Paul Kofi Krampa at the Ministry of Education, said the arrears include supervision, vehicle maintenance, travel and transport, circuit supervisors as well as overtime allowances for drivers and watchmen.
The statement said the Minister of Education, Mr Alex Tettey-Enyo last Friday, therefore, met the leadership of National Association of Graduate Teachers (NAGRAT) in Accra where he informed them about the release. Read more
NAGRAT must justify strike – Deputy Education Minister

He said the action does not make any sense given that the government had released money to pay their allowances – the reason for which they went on the strike.
Members of NAGRAT started a strike on March 1st, accusing the government of lacking commitment to implement a Memorandom of Understanding the association signed with the Ghana Education Service regarding some outstanding allowances due members. Read more
NAGRAT to embark on strike
The National Association of Graduate Teachers (NAGRAT) is threatening to go on strike on Monday to press home demands for payment of service allowance.
According to the chairman of the association, Christine Addae Poku, members have not been paid their responsibility and car maintenance allowance since January last year, a situation which has made life difficult for them.
He also accuses the Ghana Education Service of showing little or no commitment in responding to their grievances. Read more
