Driver defiles daughter

Kofi Danso, a 36-year-old driver, was on Friday arraigned at the Asamankese circuit court on two counts of defilement and incest.
He pleaded not guilty for defiling his daughter, aged 12.
The accused had days earlier appeared before the Kade District Magistrate’s Court and was remanded in custody to be sent to a higher court which had the jurisdiction to try defilement and incest cases.
Presenting the facts of the case, Police Inspector Francis Cobbina said Danso lived in the same house at Akyem Abodom with his wife and daughter. Read more
Pastor accused of sexual assault

Head pastor of the Holy Fire Pentecostal Church at Goaso in the Brong Ahafo Region is under police investigations for sexually assaulting some women in his church.
Ogya Nyame, under the pretence of providing spiritual healing to his lady congregants, is said to have fondled their breasts and engaged in all kinds of sexual escapades with them to satisfy his libido.
Confirming the incident to Joy News, Nana Atta Poku, secretary to the Omanhene, said the pastor was invited to the traditional council to answer questions on the many sexual allegations made against him.
He said the horrifying stories told by the victims of the pastor’s alleged sexual acts informed their decision to draft in the police for further investigations. Read more
Chief arrested over death threats

Reports from Wenchi in the Brong Ahafo region say the Paramount Chief of Techiman traditional area, Oseadeeyo Akumfi Ameyaw IV has caused the arrest of the chief of Tuobodom, Nana Asare Baafuor II.
Nana Asare Baafuor is alleged to have issued death threats against Oseadeeyo Akumfi Ameyaw.
Nana Asare Baafuor had just stepped out of the Wenchi High Court on Friday where he is seeking a restraining order against one Thomas Opoku, said to be developing a property on a piece of land at Tuobodom which the chief claims belongs to the traditional authority, when a white Ford bus with registration AW 2873 Z embossed only at the back, pulled up. Mr David Ampah-Bennin, Volta Regional Police Commander was speaking to the Ghana News Agency in Ho.
He confirmed that Fiagbedzi, partly bred in Ho, often visited Ho and that the Volta Regional Police Command had been “in the wait for him” when he was busted in Accra.
Mr Ampah-Bennin, who described the Fiagbedzi saga, as a remarkable feat for the police, claimed that Fiagbedzi had about 50 associates in crime lurking around and must be watched.
He said the Police expected the death of Fiagbedzi to disorganize his gang but were alert to get these accomplices in the Volta Region.
Mr Ampah-Bennin said the Police in the region were scaling up day and night patrols to tackle armed robbers, including highway robbers.
“I will personally go on patrols to enhance the campaign against crime in the Region,” Mr Ampah-Bennin stated, calling for support from all stakeholders, including the media. Read more
Careless driver kills three pupils

Job Adu Siaw, a driver whose reckless driving led to the death of three pupils and injuries to five other people, was on Tuesday sentenced to a fine of GHC1,080 by the Asamankese Circuit Court.
Siaw pleaded guilty with explanation to careless and inconsiderate driving and negligently causing harm which caused an accident resulting in the death of Kwame Asare, Henry Akomeah and Rachael Agyeiwaa.
Five other persons who were injured were Elizabeth Gyeiwa, Esther Abena, Issac Asare, Mary Kyeraa and Perpetual Dede.
Police Chief Inspector Ben Brew told the court that at about 1535 hours on January 20, 2009 Siaw, who was driving KIA Sportage private car, veered to the nearside pavement at Apedwa junction, alleging that he was crossed by one Asare, a student of the Apedwa Presbyterian Junior High School.
The vehicle then ran through a group of persons who were selling foodstuffs by the roadside, injuring them.
The dead were all pupils of Little Angle Preparatory School at Apedwa who were waiting by the roadside to board vehicles home.

Police impounds car stolen from lecturer

An Opel Astra Saloon car, belonging to Mr Victor Francis Darbah, a lecturer at the University of Education, Winneba which was snatched from his driver in Accra last year, has been retrieved by the Winneba Police.
Briefing the Ghana News Agency in Winneba, Police Chief Inspector Moses Naa-Kolgo Agbegne said the car was snatched from the lecturer’s driver, James Quansah at Madina in Accra on February 4, 2009.
However, last Monday, February 22, a former driver of the car, Patrick Danso spotted the car now with a new registration number at the Winneba junction and raised the alarm leading to the arrest of the driver.
Chief Inspector Agbegne said when the new owner of the car, Michael Quaye, 32, from Ansaful near Winneba and the complainant, Mr. Darbah were asked to produce documents covering the vehicle, the lecturer was able to do so.
Mr. Quaye then led the Police to arrest one Charles Afful who sold the car to Quaye at Agona Swedru at the cost of 3,200 Ghana Cedis. Read more

Drivers should refrain from assaulting law enforcement agents
This is the second time in four weeks that a driver has allegedly beaten law-enforcement personnel in the Eastern Region.
Narrating the incident to The Spectator on Monday, the Assistant Public Relations Officer for the Eastern Regional Police, Corporal Gideon Boateng, said on Friday, February 12, 2010, a team of police personnel and a military officer were dispatched to direct traffic and ensure law and order at the Suhum Round-About.
He said at about noon, the driver of a Ford Transporter vehicle with registration number SA 1201-09, which was being driven by a young-man at top speed, ignored the persistent signals from the police to stop.
He said the vehicle was over-speeding from Kumasi to Accra and nearly knocked down a pedestrian in the area. Read more
Ghana receives commendations on drugs fight from US

The US has commended the Ghana government for its determination to intercept, arrest and prosecute drug couriers and traffickers irrespective of who is involved.
Miss Constance Ross, a Counter Narcotics Officer of the United States Africa Command (AFRICOM) in Stuttgart, Germany, said the strong political will by Ghanaian officials relating to the fight against drugs showed that the country was preventing the consequence that is usually associated with “drug user communities”.
Briefing Ghanaian journalists who are on a tour of AFRICOM Headquarters in Stuttgart, she said the existence of a vibrant judiciary and a strong political will in Ghana had contributed significantly to the fight against drug trafficking as compared to many African countries.
Miss Ross said governments in these countries lacked the political will to arrest their own officers and individuals who either carried drugs or became distributors. Read more
Kumasi police arrest fake currency dealer

A 27-year-old man has been arrested by the police in Kumasi for dealing in fake CFA franc notes.
Akwasi Asare was caught at Odeneho Kwadaso, a suburb of Kumasi with a bundle of the CFA notes and neatly cut paper of the sizes of the US dollar.
Also seized from him were chemicals believed to be used in printing the illegal notes, cotton wool and a bandage.
Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Thomas Owoahene Acheampong, Ashanti Regional Mobile Officer of the Ghana Police Service told the press that an accomplice known only as “Apino”

Banker jailed three years for stealing

Moses Odotei Mensah, a banker, who as Manager of the Pramkese Agency of the Kwaebibirem Rural Bank, stole GH¢ 24,827, was on Tuesday sentenced to a term of three years in hard labour, by the Asamankese Circuit Court.
He pleaded not guilty.
The court ordered that Mensah, who refunded GH¢ 7,170 out of the amount stolen, should after his sentence pay the remaining GH¢ 17, 657 to the bank.
Giving the facts of the case, Police Inspector Francis Cobbina, said
Mensah was in charge of the Pramkese Agency of the Kwaebibirem rural bank between 2006 and 2008.
He said between July and September 2008, the Internal Auditor of the
bank during his normal internal control and auditing, detected that Mensah had deliberately manipulated customers’ accounts and granted fictitious loans to himself.
Mensah then succeeded in withdrawing a total of GHC 24,827 from the bank. Read more
