Tension Mounts At ECG

An Uneasy calm is reportedly prevailing among workers at the Ashanti regional branch of the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG).

Tension, according to sources, is mounting at the branch because of the alleged autocratic leadership style of the Regional Manager, Alhaji Abdulai Kurah.

Information reaching City & Business Guide indicates that Alhaji Kurah is building an empire at the work place where his cronies are given preferential treatment.

Workers, who divulged the purported dictatorial leadership style of Alhaji Kurah, said he has arrogated to himself the powers of transferring workers from one section to the other without due process.

The embittered workers, who spoke on condition of anonymity, disclosed that the regional manager only transfers workers he does not like for one reason or the other and replaces them with his cronies. “What is worrying is the fact that the regional manager takes the decision without consulting the regional management team as it should always be the case,” one affected worker pointed out.

Stressing that sectional leaders were the most affected in the purported wanton transfers, the disenchanted workers noted that the regional manager does not give prior notice to affected workers before he transfers them.

“You will just be there and he will call you to inform you that you have been transferred from this section to the other so prepare your handing over notes and leave,” another disheartened worker observed.

“At times the people who are brought in to take over the leadership and other key positions are fresh on the job and they do not have the expertise to do so but because they are the favorites of the regional manager they are brought on board.

They noted that the morale of the staff was at an all time low, adding that operations of the company had been affected due to the incompetent people who are brought to take over sensitive positions.

The dissatisfied workers alleged that though English is supposed to be the official language at the work place, the regional manager relates cordially with workers who speak Ga or Hausa.

When contacted, Alhaji Kurah expressed surprise at the allegations being leveled against him, stressing that the transfers were purely administrative and that it was aimed at strengthening certain departments of the company.
He repudiated claims that he transfers staff without consulting the regional management team. On the issue of speaking Ga or Hausa with his allies, Alhaji Kurah stated, “It is an absolute lie. I have never been tribalistic and I do not intend to go that way in the discharge of my duties.”
