It has ordered the National Service Scheme (NSS) to let go of 25,000. This directive has since been communicated to the various districts across the nation.
By the new directive, the affected young graduates from the various tertiary institutions of the country cannot apply for extension of voluntary service, as done previously. The NDC government has also placed the fate of the 40,000 national service personnel who completed their service this year in the hands of the district directors, by releasing only 10,000 voluntary service application forms countrywide.
Seventy forms were given to each district. This means that the more than 500 personnel at each district would have to compete for the few voluntary service application forms.
The directive, a source revealed, was because of allegations that some personnel under the scheme do not report to work but conspire with the directors to pay them, even though they do not come to work.
“Layoffs in hurtful, embarrassing, and completely unexpected ways such as this one can create serious frustration for the victims and their dependants,” one of the affected persons cried out to Daily Guide. “Hearing that you’ve been laid off is tough to stomach even in full health, so you can imagine the indignity of being given the news while bedridden with illness,” another young man fumed.
Job creation was strongly embodied in the 2008 manifesto of the NDC. However, Ghanaians have witnessed a deviation of what the government preached before it was given the mandate to rule the nation.
A growing number of the country’s youth are gradually becoming frustrated with the President Mills-led government’s policy direction and actions, as party foot-soldiers run affairs of government, dictating who should be appointed to a district for example.
