The pair have played together for a number of years for the Ghanaian national team, which Mensah currently captains. Mensah, who is currently recovering from a hamstring injury picked up on the opening day of the season, is delighted to welcome his compatriot to Wearside, and he’s confident Sunderland’s £13m signing will be a success.
Mensah told his official website, www.johntherock5.com: “I want to congratulate my brother and team-mate Asamoah Gyan for taking up such a bold decision.
“Such is life and I wish him well may God grant him goals.
“Joining Sunderland is also like joining manager Bruce’s family.
“Bruce and [assistant Eric] Black are like fathers to us, not to mention the loving support of Sunderland.
“They are at peace with everyone and I believe my brother will feel at home.” Mensah is reported to have been influential in the deal to bring Gyan to the club.
