Ghana’s Gyan Puts World Cup Heartache Behind Him

Asamoah Gyan

New Sunderland striker Asamoah Gyan insists his World Cup heartache is behind him and that what happened in South Africa can only make him a better player.

Gyan was one of the stand out performers in Ghana’s run to the quarter-finals, scoring three times as they became something of a Cinderella team. However, Gyan will also be remembered for missing a last-minute penalty against Uruguay that would have put Ghana into a semi-final with Holland.

“You have to be strong and move on,” said Gyan after completing his £13.1m move from French club Rennes. “It was a major, major disappointment for me but that’s in the past now.
“I have to concentrate on the positives, I had a good tournament, I’ve kept mentally strong and I’m looking forward to the future challenge with Sunderland.” Sunderland will now boast a front two valued at well over £20m as Gyan teams-up with the club’s previous record transfer Darren Bent, who cost £10m.
