Row In Legon Over Decongestion Of Commonwealth Hall

The plight of Common Health Hall of the University of Ghana, Legon has been further worsened as authorities of the school are reducing the number of students in each room from five (5) to three (3).

The above information which was disclosed to this paper have fueled immediate agitation from the level 400 students of the Hall, who have resolved to embark on a demonstration until authorities of the University rescind their decision.
The Hall is undergoing decongestion exercise to reduce the number of students in a room from five to three. Spokesperson of the concerned Students Union, Eugene Boadi, said the action of the University has caused a lot of accommodation challenges on the campus which if not resolved could lead to student unrest. “It’s been weeks into the new school year and we are still sitting at the entrance of the Hall without doing anything”, one of the level four hundred students lamented.

Speaking to this paper, the spokesperson said under the University laid out policy, only level Hundred (100) and four hundred (400) students are assigned beds in the five (5) traditional halls of the University; so after the University have provided beds to all level hundred (100) students, many of the level four hundred (400) students thought the few remaining spaces will be made available for them to occupy. But suddenly this has not been the case as several beds at the Common Wealth Hall still remain empty without mattresses.

According to Eugene Boadi “about seven thousand (7000) capacity rooms have been built in the Common Wealth Hall but there are not enough facilities available for its usage. What they are now trying to do will worsen the situation of the students”.
The University is undertaking a decongestion exercise at the Hall where number of students in the room have been reduced from five (5) to three (3) and this decision has not augured well with the student leadership.
