Head-teachers and teachers of public schools should sign performance contract with Ghana Education Service (GES) to provide quality teaching in basic schools, The Governance Issues Forum Network (GIFNet), has suggested.

The Network observed that many teachers in public schools have enrolled their children in the private schools where effective supervision and targets have been set for both teachers and their head-teachers.

Members of the Network under the auspices of the Institute for Democratic Governance (IDEG) made the suggestion at its pre-dialogue workshop in Ho on “Promoting quality education for national development.”

It comprised people of different social and professional back-grounds, seeking to promote sustained civic participation and public accountability in governance and development at the district level.

It also suggested the provision of school infrastructure where these are lacking and the expansion of existing ones to ease congestion, improve pupil- teacher ratio and phase out the shift system as well as attract teachers to deprived areas.
This is to be done alongside improvement in the school environment through the provision of toilet and water facilities, libraries, and Information Communication Technology (ICT) facilities which has become a major attraction for pupils and students.

Meanwhile, members of the Network in the six GIF districts have prepared position papers on strategies for improving education to be tabled for discussion with their respective Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies (MMDAs).

These are Sekondi-Takoradi and Ajumako, Western region, Enyam Essiam, Central Region, Ashiaman, Greater Accra, New Juaben, Eastern Region, East Gonja, Northern region and Ho in the Volta Region.
