Commonwealth Hall Extends Olive Branch

Council for students of the Commonwealth hall of the University of Ghana has extended an olive branch to the new Vice Chancellor of the University to amicably address recent misunderstandings between the authorities and members of the hall.

This follows what the lawyers deem as a warmth statement made by Professor Ernest Aryeetey in connection with the legal tussle between students of the hall and the University.

Students of the Commonwealth Hall took the University to court over the latter’s decision to convert the only male hall into a mixed graduate facility.
Lawyers for the students this week filed contempt charges against the University. They said by seeking to admit fresh graduate students and denying continuing students accommodation in the hall, the University has disobeyed the court’s ruling to halt the conversion process.

But speaking to Citi News a member of the Counsel for the hall, Nana Ato Dadzie said counsel may seek an amicable settlement of the matter following the kind words from the new Vice Chancellor.

‘‘My attention has been drawn to a rather warmth statement coming from the new vice-chancellor who has just been sworn in. I think he would want this matter settled outside of court and secondly, he also believes in the right of Commonwealth hall to lead it’s own life the way it should within the boundaries of the law, and I think that we have never wanted to be in court in the first instance, except that we felt all the gates for reconciliation were shut and the students were compelled to come to court. I must also mention that leadership from the University Alumini has written to us seeking the path of reconciliation and like I am saying, this is what the University should be seen for’’ he said.
The University begins the 2010 / 2011 Academic year on Wednesday August 4.
