The Deputy Minister for Information, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa has dismissed reports that Cabinet has rejected the National Youth Policy.
Mr. Okudzeto Ablakwa was reacting to a claim by the Acting coordinator of the National Youth Council, Dr. Sekou Nkrumah, that the NDC government was unwilling to implement the policy with the reason that,it is not in line with the vision and ideologies of the party.
He told Joy FM on Thursday June 24, that the government had directed the Ministry of Youth and Sports to formulate a new policy in a fortnight, a decision Dr. Sekou Nkrumah is unhappy about.
Dr. Nkrumah is reported to have said that he suspects the decision was taken out of partisan consideration.
Sekou Nkrumah said the policy has been dragging for far too long and called on the youth across the political divide to press government for the policy to be institutionalized.
The national youth policy was formulated by the erstwhile New Patriotic Party government.
In response to Dr. Sekou Nkrumah’s claim, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa noted that government has only asked a subcommittee of parliament to review a meagre portion of the document which appears too voluminous.
‘‘I have personally spoken to Dr. Sekou Nkrumah and it appears there was a communication problem. The youth policy has never been rejected. That is untrue’’ he said.
He said that will take a very short time. According to him, the policy which will be made available to Ghanaians on demand must be precise.
He said government was committed to the development of the youth, hence the urgency and importance it attaches to the National Youth Policy, which will become a document to empower and guide the country’s youth.
