The Deputy Minister of Health, Hon. Rojo Mettle Nunoo says government is considering ways of developing herbal medicine, not only for local consumption but for export like China and India have done. He said most herbal medicines work effectively in some instances compared to orthodox medicines.
These are contained in a speech read for the Deputy Minister of Health; at the inauguration of the Ghana Association of Medical herbalists, in Accra. The medical herbalists are products of the KUNST at Kumasi, trained in Bachelor of Science degree in herbal medicine for 4 years. Hon Mettle Nunoo noted that with the training of herbal medicine graduate from (KNUST), herbal medicine should be incorporated into the healthcare delivery system of the country.
The President of Ghana Association of Ghana Medical Association of Medical Herbalists (GAMH), Mr. Bernard Kofi Turkson says the training they have has put them in the position to raise herbal medicine practice to higher height and pleaded that National Health Insurance should cover herbal medicines too.
The national organizer of the Ghana Association and Federations of Traditional Medicine Practice (GHAFTRAM), Nana Kwadwo Obiri said it is sad that these graduates are posted, to private medical centres and not government hospitals or clinics.
