Gov’t assures of better tomorrow

204x_mg_john_mahamaThe government has assured of better times from next year, emphasizing that the country will witness a significant improvement in the economy which will result in job creation in the public and other sectors especially the agricultural sector.

In a Christmas message to the nation yesterday at the Castle yesterday, Vice- President John Mahama said now that the government had stabilise the economy by bringing the core economic indicators back on track it would push for its growth and expansion, especially the agriculture sector next year.

Vice-President Mahama said on assumption of office the Mills’ administration inherited an economy with a huge budget deficit, a high rate of inflation and a free falling cedi, which necessitated austere measures to stabilise it in order to prevent it from affecting businesses and the quality of life of the people.

“Considering the challenges we faced, we have done very well in respect of stabilising the economy by bringing the core economic indicators back on track,” he said, adding that the country was already experiencing an increase in food production and gave the assurance that the huge food import bill would be reduced considerably next year.

Noting that Christmas was a season of peace and goodwill, the Vice President hoped that it would pervade all activities during the Yuletide and urged people in conf1ict prone areas to reconcile and live in peace and unity.

Mr Mahama advised motorists to guard against making the roads “slaughtering houses and killing fields” saying, the carnage on the roads, especially during the X’mas season ought not to recur.

“If you drive don’t drink, if you drink don’t drive,” he repeated the refrain and cautioned drivers against the temptation to over speed.

In another development, the official website of the Office of the Vice-President, www.viceprez.gov.gh was launched yesterday.

The facility, with an interactive site, a column for videos on the Vice¬ President’s activities and news items, is to bring the Office of the Vice-President closer to the public and Ghanaians in the diaspora.

John Abdulai Jinapor, Spokesperson for the Vice-President who performed the launch, explained that it was to curb the incidence of impersonation of the Vice-President’s Office.
