Asiedu Nketia justifies violence in party elections

204x_mg_bvasar_asiedunketiaThe General Secretary of the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) says ongoing agitations during constituency and regional elections are normal and to be expected of democratic elections.

In an interview with Joy News on Monday, Mr. Asiedu Nketia said although there have been some misunderstandings, they have not been widespread.

Agitation seems to have characterized some of the constituency and regional elections of the NDC across the country.

In Kumasi for example, elections of executives in the Subin constituency were marred by boycotts and protests over allegations of irregularities.

There were threats of legal action over what some of the protestors claimed were attempts by incumbent executives to manipulate the election process.

In Tamale, there were agitations over the candidature of known NDC activist, Sofo Azorka, for the position of vice chairman. Mr Azorka leads a group known as Azorka boys, noted for rabble-rousing at major events in the region.

These are but a few of the agitations that have characterized the party’s regional and constituency elections.

But, General Secretary Johnson Asiedu Nketia says these are all normal occurrences, common with leadership elections of this nature.

“Naturally, elections are a time for decision making about leadership so you expect some of these things,” he said.

According to the NDC General Secretary, the party is working with guidelines provided by the party’s constitution to iron out differences between party members.
