Essien nominated for Fifa gong
Ghana midfielder Michael Essien listed by Fifa as one of 23 players in contention for the 2009 World Player of the Year.
The 28-year-old is chasing the highest individual award in world football although he is considered an outsider to upset the likes of Lionel Messi, Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Cristiano Ronaldo and Kaka who are much fancied for the award.
The Chelsea ace was voted the 2005 French Player of the Year and has since that year been voted runnners-up for the African Footballer of the Year accolade.
Essien is short listed alongisde fellow Africans Didier Drogba and Samuel Eto’o who moved to Inter Milan this summer.
An African footballer is yet to emulate the feat of Liberian football legend George Weah who beat competition from Paolo Maldini and Jurgen Klinsmann to win the 1995 award.
The list will however be pruned to five by Fifa for coaches and national team captainsto vote for the most outstanding footballer.
The winner of the award will be announced on 21 December in Zurich

Essien nominated for Player of Year
Ghana midfielder Michael Essien is one of 23 players nominated by world football governing body FIFA for the 2009 World Player of the Year.
The Chelsea midfielder whose previous individual awards includes winning the BBC African Football of the Year in 2007 and French Player of the Year in 2005 is however a long outside shot for the honour with Argentina’s Lionel Messi the early favourite.
Essien is joined by two other African big names on the short list. They are Didier Drogba who beat Essien to the CAF Player of the Year awards in 2007 and three-time African player of the year Samuel Eto’o who was brilliant in helping Barcelona to a treble of Spanish League, Cup and European Champions League triumph this year.
The winner of the award is voted for by coaches and captains of national teams. FIFA will then cut the list down to five based on the votes before announcing the winner at a function at the Zurich Kongresshaus on Monday December 21.

Vorsah wants to impress
TSG Hoffenheim player Isaac Vorsah insists he has to impress for both club and country if he is make it to the 2010 CAN and World Cup competitions for Ghana.

Ghana nationals on ship seized by pirates

There are two Ghanaian, 23 Russian and two Philippine nationals on board a Thailand-flagged fishing vessel hijacked off the Seychelles, an International Transport Workers’ Federation official said on Friday.
The vessel, the Thai Union 3, was hijacked by two pirate skiffs about 370 km (200 miles) north of the Seychelles on Thursday. Read more
