TENSION IS brewing in the Kadjebi District as Assembly Members, National Democratic Congress (NDC) executives and some residents are calling for an immediate probe into the activities of the DCE for the area, , who has allegedly acquired a VW Jetta saloon car at the cost of GH¢17,000 and built a house within a few months of coming into office.
The suspicious officials, party members and residents further questioned the manner in which he spends the assembly’s funds.
In response, the DCE told DAILY GUIDE that he won a lottery, a development his enemies were envious of, hence using every means to uproot him from his position as DCE.
However, a member of the Assembly reacted thus: “We are only surprised that this man who borrowed money in the heat of the campaign and lobbied for cash to enable him make his rounds for the position as DCE, has built a house and bought a car in just the first five months of coming into office.”
One of the aggrieved party men went further: “Look my brother, this same man sold his vehicle to campaign when he was short of money. Where did he suddenly get these riches from?”
“To the best of our knowledge, the DCE has not been paid his salary yet to enable him buy such an expensive car and rebuild his father’s house. He started the building when he came into office and bought the car in less than two months; how?”
Some Assembly Members also claimed that the dealings of the DCE, with regard to the disbursement of funds, is not transparent enough, alleging further that he claimed he had used part of the Assembly’s fund to pay the debt he inherited from the previous administration without telling them exactly how much debt he inherited.
The aggrieved persons, who wished to remain anonymous for now, told DAILY GUIDE in exclusive interviews that they are disappointed in the DCE whom they alleged “has suddenly turned himself into a terror over us to the detriment of the Assembly.”
They said there is the urgent need for a probe into the activities of Mr. Alifui who “is not giving the District any hope for the realization of the party’s campaign for a better Ghana.”
They contended that the only achievement Mr. Alifui has chalked so far is the double acquisition of a car and house for himself while he showed hostility toward the youth in the District who dared ask for any form of assistance.
According to them, Alifui pulled down his father’s uncompleted building and rebuilt it from foundation level and wondered if his travelling allowances could afford that luxury in these few months.
They said that eight paramount chiefs, who during the contest for the position of the DCE appealed to President Mills not to appoint Alifui, were right after all when they described him as arrogant and lacked respect for traditional authorities and other people.
His accusers noted that the Kadjebi DCE, since assumption of office six months ago, has blatantly refused to pay courtesy call on the chiefs, who are the custodians of the land, to introduce himself as the new DCE, with the excuse that going round to meet the chiefs would cost him approximately GH¢1000, an amount he does not have.
He is also alleged to have been rude to some opinion leaders who expressed concern about the deteriorating nature of the major road linking the district. He reportedly told them to go to the Osu Castle and report to the President since he could not do anything about it.
Prior to his appointment, eight paramount chiefs making up the Kadjebi District of the Volta Region, petitioned President Mills to withdraw Mr. Alifui’s nomination.
The Chiefs, at a press conference, alleged that the nominee lacked “the requisite qualification and exposure to enable him handle the affairs of the District”.
They alleged during the press conference that Alifui was neither loyal nor a suitable party candidate, as he purportedly offered himself as an independent parliamentary candidate against his own party.
Mr. Alifui, in an interview with DAILY GUIDE at Ho on Monday, however denied the allegations, saying that those making the allegations are living in the world of ignorance.
The DCE admitted that he has bought the vehicle and reconstructed his father’s house but said luck smiled on him when he hit a lottery jackpot, running into thousands of Ghana cedis, though he did not reveal the exact amount he won.
He noted that although he bought the car before winning the lottery, he purchased it on credit with a loan from his bankers and is yet to complete payment.
Alifui warned his critics to stop thinking of how to pull him down but rather join him to develop the district.
He also disclosed that he is making arrangements to visit the chiefs of the area, but claimed he had visited some of them unofficially.
