Kenya claim Ghana friendly

Ghana are likely to play Kenya Kenya FA officials have announced that Kenya will take on Ghana’s Black Stars in a friendly on June 16 at the Kasarani Stadium in Nairobi.

The Ghana Football Association is yet to confirm whether it will play the game.

The Black Stars will train in Kenya ahead of their World Cup qualifier away to Sudan on June 20, while the Harambee Stars will be up against Mozambique same day.

Kenya coach Antoine Hey has said that the friendly will lift the confidence of his team before their World Cup tie against Mozambique. Kenya fell 3-0 to Nigeria at the weekend in continuation of the qualifying tournament for the 2010 World Cup and Africa Cup of Nations.

When asked whether he would recall Mathare United defender Edgar ‘Fighter’ Ochieng to the team, Hey insisted he was proud of his defence, picking Julius Owino and Pascal Ochieng for special praise, saying the two players performed beyond his expectations.

He said that the only changes he will make will be in the team’s attack, which wasted several chances that could well have changed the outcome of the match.

Hey further noted that that their next qualifying match, which is against Mozambique, is a must-win encounter.
“Our players lacked experience but they played well. We must now focus on our next game and ensure that we take the three points so as to be in contention for the Africa Cup of Nations,” he said.

Kenya skipper Musa Otieno paid glowing tribute to the coach and asked Kenyans to support him.

“We will live to fight another day; this wasn’t our day,” Otieno said after the Nigeria match.

“We had a lot of chances but couldn’t convert them while our opponents had their chances and converted most of them. We [must now] shift our focus to Mozambique at home.”

Kenya are bottom in their group without a point after playing two matches. The pool is led by Tunisia, who have six points, followed by Nigeria with four points and Mozambique, who are third with one point.
