Political scientist calls for a second Chamber of Parliament

Parliament

A socio-political scientist at the University of Cape Coast, Kingsley Adjei, has advocated for a second Chamber of Parliament made up of former speakers and Chiefs to bring to bear their rich experience to the development of the nation.

He said it is high time Chiefs are recognized as agents of national development and be motivated to perform that role.

Mr. Kingsley Adjei made this submission in an interview with Ekourba Gyasi on Adom Dwaso Nsem on Monday. He was speaking on the relevance of the Chieftaincy Institution to modern day democracy.

His interview was in line with the call by the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, for due recognition to be given to chieftaincy institutions to be able to play its role in national development.

Mr. Adjei said the Asantehene together with other chiefs have demonstrated to the world that central governments can partner very effectively with traditional institutions for purposes of national development.

According to him, appointment of chiefs to such positions should be detached from political affiliations, adding, there are lot of chiefs who have shown enough competence to be tapped for Ghana’s development.

Mr. Adjei argued that if the constitution recommends that certain appointments at the local level be made in consultation with chiefs, why can’t the chiefs be trusted to handle key political positions in the country.

The political sociologist also advocated for the setting up of Royal Fund for use by chiefs in the developmental agenda of the country.
